Focus Playing Art DIY

C'est en 2006 que DenisDebanne a eu l'idée de Playing Art. Il s'agissait de proposer une alternative aux plate-formes de l'époque (Qee, Dunny, Trexi...), un personnage étudié pour servir de support au graphisme mais moins figé que ses camarades.
Et puis, puisque le logo de la marque serait un singe, autant utiliser la même identité pour le jouet.

Pour que cette figurine devienne une vraie "toile" pour l'artiste, il est nécessaire d'offrir un maximum de surfaces vierges. Le but est de proposer un jouet à la personnalité forte mais facilement transformable ; c'est pour ça que la face du singe est plate, sans nez, sans yeux, sans rien. D'ailleurs personne n'est certain que ce soit bien le côté plat sa vraie face !

En plus Playing Art peut prendre plein de poses, des attitudes infinies... Zen, agressif, impassible, il devient un élement de décoration parfaitement modulable.

Depuis 2006, il y a eu beaucoup de recherches sur la forme et les articulations, de travail réalisé à la modélisation, des négociations acharnées avec le fabricant, des heures de réflexion sur le choix des matières... Et aujourd'hui Playing Art est accepté et reconnu par les artistes comme par les amateurs de bel objet.

It's back in 2006 that Denis Debanne had the idea of designing "Playing Art". The purpose was to offer an alternative to existents platforms that already existed (Qee, Dunny, Trexi...), to draw a character designed as a base for art but not as still as its friends.
And then, as the brand's logo would be a monkey, we should use the same for the toy.

In order to transform the figure into a real "frame" for the artist, we had to propose a maximum of blank surfaces. The goal is to propose a toy with a strong personality but with a shape that can be easily customized; it's why the face is flat, with no nose, no eye, no nothing. And yet, nobody's really sure that the flat side is actually the face!

What is more, Playing Art can take a lot of cool poses, an infinity of attitudes... Zen, angry, neutral, it become a piece for deco that you can change at will.

Since 2006, there has been a lot of researches on shape and joints, work done on modelling, hard negotiating with the manufacturer, hours spent on choosing the right material... And now Playing Art is well appreciated and recognized by both artists and design lovers.

I love toys

J'avais envie de vous montrer un bout d'étagère ! Dernièrement j'ai acquis ces deux petites pièces...

Le Rose Vampire de Super7 est magnifique. Le design du personnage créé par Josh Herbolsheimer est particulièrement bien trouvé et la sculpture bien réalisée. Les peintures sont soignées et le plastique "made in Japan" de très bonne qualité. Je trouve juste dommage que le personnage soit un peu figé mais finalement ça lui donne un petit air "mascotte" qui me rappelle ces jouets publicitaires qu'on pouvait gagner quand papa avait fait 5 pleins d'essence. Ce monstre est mignon tout plein, un vrai séducteur.

Et puis il y a le BUD (Blow Up Doll) de Jamungo. Un petit toy plateforme très bien réalisé et plein d'articulations (mais alors tout plein, il bouge dans tous les sens). Je suis un grand fan de Yuck, j'admire son travail depuis longtemps. C'est très propre et très sale, de la ligne claire très compliquée... Le travail d'impression sur le jouet est très soigné et le dessin sur ces formes rondes bien approprié.

Je montrerai d'autres jouets bientôt...

I wanted to show you a part of my shelves! Recently I acquired these two pieces...

The Rose Vampire from Super7 is wonderful. The design of the character by Josh Herbolsheimer is really well done and the sculpting is very good. The paintings are thorough and the plastic "made in Japan" is excellent quality. I just regret a little bit that the figure stands in a too straight position but it also gives it that little something of the mascots we could collect in the gas stations when I was a kid. This monster is very cute, a real seducer.

And then there's the BUD (Blow Up Doll) from Jamungo. A little platform toy very well conceived and full of articulations (but really a lot, it can move all the parts in all directions). I'm a big fan of Yuck, I admire his artwork for a long time now. It's very clean and very dirty, some simple lines on complicated designs... The printing on the toy is really well done and the drawing fits well the round shapes of the BUD.

Focus Bali-Bali

Quand Spasm One nous a promis une version de notre Playing Art, nous nous attendions à l'interprétation d'un des monstres Kaiju chers à son cœur ; nous étions assez intrigués. Mais voilà, Spasm One ne va jamais où on l'attend... On lui offre un singe, il le transforme en Barong balinais, esprit lion qu'il condamne à danser. Évidemment pour nous, ça a été le coup de foudre, ce design noir et jaune nous a immédiatement séduit. Et puis il y a des flammes, c'est cool les flammes !

When Spasm One promised us a version of our Playing Art, we were expecting an interpretation of one of the kaiju monsters dear to his heart. But now, Spasm One never goes where you expect him to go ... We offer him a monkey, he transforms it into a Balinese Barong, lion spirit that he condemned to dance. Obviously for us, it was love at first sight, this black and yellow design has immediately captivated us. And then there is flames, flames is cool!

Focus Woodi

Depuis longtemps, nous admirons le travail de Aro, l'originalité de son trait et les choix de ses couleurs (ou de ne pas utiliser la couleur) nous fascinaient. Enthousiasmé par notre projet, Christian nous a livré son interprétation de Playing Art, Woodi, le dernier singe plante de derrière Jupiter. Woodi est sauvage, Woodi est classe, Woodi est sobre, Woodi est camo, Woodi est feuilles, Woodi est plastique, Woodi est mignon, Woodi est méchant, Woodi est bleu, Woodi est noir... On adore Woodi ! ^^

We've long been admiring the work of Aro, the originality of his line and the choice of his colors (or to not use color) is fascinating us. Enthusiastic on this project, Christian has given us his interpretation of Playing Art, Woodi, the last living greenery-ape from backside of Jupiter. Woodi is wild, Woodi is classy, Woodi is sober, Woodi is camo, Woodi is leaves, Woodi is plastic, Woodi is cute, Woodi is mean, Woodi is blue, Woodi is black ... We love Woodi! ^^

Focus Marcel & Jessica

Oh les jolis petits singes coquins !...

Le 29 octobre 2007, j'avais rendez-vous avec Tizieu pour la première fois. C'était à l'occasion de l'exposition collective "Hello Ghetto Fou" chez Artoyz, j'en profitai pour lui faire part d'un projet qui me trottait alors dans la tête. Puisque le logo de notre entreprise était un petit singe un peu civilisé, pourquoi ne pas présenter dès le lancement de la société, une mascotte (ou plutôt un couple de mascottes). Le style de Tizieu est parfait pour cet exercice, mélange de BD et d'art urbain, il correspond exactement à ce que nous attendions. 3 jours plus tard, emballé par le défi il nous envoie les premiers croquis, l'idée était là... Marcel arrive un peu plus tard avec son look malicieux ensuite rejoint par sa copine Jessica.

Le plus compliqué dans tout ça ? Les T-Shirts ? Les deux jeux de mains ?

Oh the cute little naughty monkeys...

On October 29, 2007, I first met Tizieu. That was for the occasion of the exhibition "Hello Ghetto Fou" at Artoyz, I took the opportunity to to talk with him about a project I then had in mind. Since our company logo was a little monkey somewhat civilized, why not present at the launch of the company, a mascot (or rather a couple of mascots). Tizieu's style is perfect for this, mixing comics and street art, it is exactly what we expected. 3 days later, excited by the challenge he sent us the first sketches, the idea was there ... Marcel arrived a little later with his mischievous look then joined by his girlfriend Jessica.

The most complicated in all this? The T-shirts? The separates hands?

Focus Moon-K...

J'aimerais vous parler un peu plus de Moon-K...

Tout d'abord que les choses soient claires, malgré son nom ce robot n'a jamais vu la Lune. Créé dans les années 70, cet ordinateur autonome avait, d'après son créateur, pour mission de défendre la Terre, au sol.

Pourquoi commencer par ce jouet plutôt qu'un autre ? Parce-que c'est le dernier à avoir été livré... C'est celui qui nous aura pris le plus de temps.

Il aura fallu trouver le bon partenaire pour réaliser les stickers pour les yeux... En sérigraphie, s'il vous plait ! Il aura fallu s'assurer ensuite que chaque planche de sticker est proprement découpée. Nous avons compté 16 possibilités différentes mais c'est sans mélanger les motifs, vous pouvez vous amuser à mettre le regard que vous voulez à votre Moon-K il aura toujours l'air aussi impressionnant !

Le design du jouet est d'une extrême finesse. Oui le jouet est blanc mais sa décoration est toute en traits et en vis. Il aura fallu faire recommencer les peintures plusieurs fois avant que les traits ne soient correctement alignés et que les dessins des petites plaques correspondent bien aux planches techniques fournies par l'artiste.

Et puis il y a cette boîte. Un exemple en matière de documentation, la parfaite réplique d'un authentique container maritime ; les codifications des marquages sont rigoureusement fidèles aux normes. Regardez sur les côtés, le moteur qui sert à refroidir le container a chauffé l'affiche des mentions légales et dessous les frottements répétés ont usé une peinture sauvage représentant le monstre moderne.

Mais le mieux (ou le pire pour certains) reste à venir... Cette boîte, il va falloir la découper pour profiter pleinement de la base du Moon-K comme l'a conçue LeJam. La boîte, se découpe, se retourne et se transforme en display pour le jouet. Et on comprend mieux comment ce robot a pu atteindre notre époque sans s'abimer. Tout est prévu pour assurer sa maintenance, du générateur atomique à la sauvegarde de ses données... Même le plan de maintenance. Il y a tout.

Enfin pas tout puisque le papa nous parle déjà de modules supplémentaires en paper model à télécharger bientôt sur notre site...

Let me talk a little more about Moon-K ...

First of all, to be clear, despite its name this robot has never seen the moon. Created in the 70s, this self powered computer was, as told by its creator, created to defend the Earth, on the ground.

Why starting with this toy over another? Because it has been the last to be delivered ... It is the one which took the longest to be produced.

It took finding the right partner to make the stickers for the eyes ... In screen printing, please! We had then to ensure that each board of sticker is cleanly cut. We counted 16 different possibilities but without mixing patterns, you can have fun putting the look you want on your Moon-K it will always look as impressive!

The design of the toy is extremely fine. Yes the toy is white but its decoration is all in features and screws. We had to start over the paintings several times before the lines are properly aligned and that the drawings of small plates correspond to the technical sheets supplied by the artist.

And then there is this box. An example of documentation, a perfect replica of an authentic shipping container; markings are strictly faithful to the standards. Look at the sides, the motor used to cool the container has heated the printing with the mentions and below the repeated friction have scratched a painting depicting the wild-modern monster.

But the better (or worse for some) is coming ... This box, you will have to cut it out to enjoy the base of the Moon-K as conceived by LeJam. The box is opened, turned and turns into a display for the toy. And we understand better how the robot was able to achieve our time without being damaged. Everything is planned to ensure its maintenance, an atomic generator and safeguard for its data ... Even the maintenance plan. It has everything.

Well not everything, since its dad is already talking of additional modules in paper model for download soon on our website ...
